A specimen of hemimorphite tumbled pocket stone. Hemimorphite is a zinc silicate mineral (Zn₄Si₂O₇(OH)₂·H₂O) prized for its sky-blue to bluish-green hues and attractive translucency. It often forms botryoidal crusts, radiating aggregates, or drusy coatings in the oxidation zones of zinc ore deposits, though tumbling reveals its bright color and vitreous luster in a smooth, tactile form. Its name refers to its unusual crystal morphology: hemimorphic crystals with different terminations at each end of the same crystal. With a Mohs hardness of 4.5–5, hemimorphite is moderately soft and best handled with care to prevent scratching. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and often occurs in association with smithsonite, cerussite, and other secondary zinc minerals. Important localities include China (notably Yunnan), Mexico, Namibia, and the United States (notably Arizona and New Mexico).
