Its rich blue color comes primarily from trace amounts of iron and titanium, though sapphires can occur in nearly every color of the rainbow, known as “fancy sapphires.” With a Mohs hardness of 9 like ruby, sapphire is extremely durable, second only to diamond. It crystallizes in the trigonal system and exhibits distinct basal cleavage. Major deposits are found in Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), Madagascar, Thailand, and Montana (USA).
